Decade luck
Roughly ten-year chapters — the long background rhythm behind years and months.
Decade luck, traditionally called Daewun, is a background pillar that changes roughly every ten years of life. In the Universe view on the Chart screen we score each decade pillar against your birth chart using your helpful and caution element lists and label the chapter supportive, demanding, steady, or push and pull.
A little history
Classical saju treats life as layers of time. Your four birth pillars are fixed. On top of them, practitioners track luck pillars that roll forward — decade luck for the long arc and yearly luck for the annual rhythm.
Decade luck answers: “What is the longer backdrop during this stretch of life?” It does not replace your natal chart; it sits beside it like weather over terrain.
Each decade pillar is walked from your month pillar, one stem–branch pair at a time. Two things decide how: which direction you walk, and at what age the first chapter opens.
The direction follows the classical rule — a yang year with a man, or a yin year with a woman, counts forward; the other two count backward. The opening age is the distance from your birth moment to the solar term that governs it, three days to the year, so it usually lands somewhere between one and ten rather than on your tenth birthday. The strip below opens at 7 as an illustration; yours is computed from your own chart.
If you skipped the question in the birth form, we do not guess. Those charts keep the older simplified progression instead — one pair every ten years from age zero, counting forward — because a direction chosen for you would be wrong for half the people it was chosen for.

How decades advance
Life is split into ~10-year chapters from birth. The pillar updates when you enter a new chapter.

…Formula (simplified): decade step = your age ÷ 10 (rounded down). The luck pillar stem and branch advance from your month pillar by that many steps on the 10-stem / 12-branch cycles.
Example: ages 10–19 use decade step 1; ages 20–29 use step 2, and so on.
How we score each part
Your chart supplies two reference lists from balance analysis, and they never share an element. So each decade part gets one of three labels — the fourth, push and pull, is a thing only a whole chapter can be.

Each decade has 2 scored parts (stem + branch). Universe shows the count — e.g. 0 supportive · 0 demanding · 2 steady — then rolls those into one chapter label.
Overall decade label merges both parts. Agree and the chapter takes their shared label. Disagree — one helpful, one caution — and the chapter reads push and pull. When one part is steady and the other is not, the one with something to say wins.
Push and pull is not a middle setting or a shrug; it is the specific case of a chapter pulling two ways at once, and it is the only way a decade can carry that label. Roughly one chapter in five does.
